American Banker Introduces Most Powerful Women in Banking: Next

Spotlighting high-achieving female bankers age 40 and under, seen as the next generation of industry leaders

NEW YORK, NY (April 29, 2019)American Banker, SourceMedia’s essential resource for senior executives in banking and financial services, announced the honorees of its first-ever Most Powerful Women in Banking: Next program, highlighting 15 women who have demonstrated exceptional leadership early in their careers.

“SourceMedia is proud to build on our deep commitment to support women in banking with this new initiative,” said Gemma Postlethwaite, CEO of SourceMedia. “These professionals bring important and fresh perspective to leadership in financial services.”

The Next program, an extension of American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking, calls attention to women, age 40 and under, whose achievements set them apart in their companies’ leadership pipelines. The complete list can be viewed at https://www.americanbanker.com/list/wib-next-2019. American Banker will recognize this year’s honorees at a celebratory luncheon during its LEAD conference, a one-day program for female bankers that focuses on professional and personal development. The conference takes place on May 22, 2019, at the Hilton New York Midtown Hotel in Manhattan.

In an industry that has established achieving diversity in its top ranks as a priority, this list offers some insight into what the future holds, by showcasing high-potential candidates to own the corner office someday. Among other criteria to be considered for the list, each woman must have played a significant role in at least one major, high-impact project at her company.

“This next generation of women may be younger than those in our Most Powerful Women rankings, but I was blown away by how accomplished they are,” said Bonnie McGeer, executive editor of American Banker and chair of the Most Powerful Women program. “Their stories will inspire others across the industry.”

Women in Banking: Next applicants must have an endorsement from a senior executive at their financial institutions and demonstrate C-Suite potential to be considered for the list. Additional requirements for consideration are:

  • A nomination by one of their mentors or direct managers
  • A minimum of one year with their current institution
  • A high-level participation in a major initiative for their institution during the previous 18 months
  • A demonstration of leadership qualities beyond that particular project

The addition of this program further advances the mission of the Most Powerful Women in Banking program, now entering its 17th year, while also delivering on American Banker’s broader mission to cover the agenda for the industry’s future. Since 2001, American Banker’s Most Powerful Women in Banking and Finance ranking has recognized the professional achievements and influence of top-performing female executives in banking and financial services. In addition to the new Next list, the annual program also honors the 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking, the 25 Most Powerful Women in Finance, the 25 Women to Watch, and the Top Teams in Banking.
